Obituary for Arthur W. Shafer

Arthur W. Shafer
of Horseheads, NY passed away on Saturday evening, November 17, 2018 at the age of 83 with his three loving children by his side. Art was born on September 6, 1935 in Corning, NY. He was predeceased by his parents, Walton and Helen Mourhess Shafer; former wife, Victoria DeLauro Shafer ; daughter-in-law, Michelle Shafer and sister Jeannine Fletcher. He is survived by his children, Gordon, Karen, and Ryan Shafer all of Horseheads, NY; granddaughter, Skylar Pye of Layton, UT; loving sister, Beverlee Rice of New Stanton, PA; brother, Robert and sister-in-law Julie of Lindley, NY; and his four legged companion Jiggy. Much of his life revolved around his pride of managed Crystal Lanes in Corning for several years and owning and operating Paramount Lanes. He loved promoting the game of bowling in the Elmira/Corning area and was involved in teaching his three children how to bowl. His proudest moments were watching his children bowl on national television. His love for bowling began at a young age setting pins as a pin boy at Corning Bowl. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed teaching his children how to play golf. He was an over the top Yankees and NY football Giants fan. There was never an evening during the summer when the game wasn't on his tv on WPIX or YES. He passed his love for baseball and football to his children. He was a member of the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War as well as the reserves after active duty. He always loved and appreciated a new vehicle as his favorite was a Ford Thunderbird convertible that he ordered brand new in 1962. Art was inducted into the Elmira Bowling Hall of Fame and the Corning Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame. It was the families wishes that services be held privately. We love him and will miss him greatly, signed Pookie, Sweetpea and Doc.
