Obituary for Barbara Anne Cobb (Bigus)

Barbara Anne Bigus Cobb
Barbara Anne Bigus Cobb, 77, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She went to heavenly rest in the peace of God on February 12, 2021 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira NY due to complications from COVID-19. Barb was born on May 12, 1943 in Wilkes-Barre PA, where she graduated from Hanover High School in 1960 and Wilkes College in 1965. She worked as an elementary school teacher in Painted Post NY, where she met the love of her life, Robert Cobb. Barb and Bob married in 1967 and spent 53 years together, first raising their two children, Jeffrey Cobb (Ellen Reed) of Woodinville WA and Amy Cobb of Waterville ME, and later enjoying life as the doting grandparents of Henry, Oliver, and Simon Cobb. Barb also was a surrogate grandmother to the children and grandchildren of her wide network of friends and family, greeting any new arrival with a thoughtfully chosen, personal gift. Barb enjoyed a second career as an Avon representative for more than 20 years. Barb turned customers into friends, regularly earning Mrs. Albee President’s Club and Honor Society awards for sales excellence and outstanding customer service. Being an Avon lady suited her well because she enjoyed talking with people, often turning chance meetings with strangers into opportunities to gather and share life stories. She was extremely empathetic and deeply interested in people and could be counted on to provide help and emotional support to anyone with health issues or other challenges. She also was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary Our Mother Catholic Church in Horseheads. Barb was well-loved in the Horseheads NY community where she and Bob lived for almost 50 years. Gardening and birdwatching were two of her passions. Barb inherited her mother's green thumb and transformed the backyard into a garden full of flowering shrubs, trees, flower beds, and birds. Barb was predeceased by her parents Stephen and Martha (née Griscavage) Bigus and brothers Stephen Bigus of Wilkes-Barre PA and Ronald Bigus of Panama City Beach FL. In addition to her husband, children, and grandsons, she is survived by her brothers George Bigus (Kaye) of Panama City Beach FL and Joseph Bigus (Jennifer) of Hilton Head SC; sister-in-law Susan Bigus of Bluffton SC; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and loyal friends. A private burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Truro MA on Cape Cod. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Horseheads NY area at a later date. In remembrance of Barb’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to Save the Children (
