Age 92, of Horseheads, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019. Born April 25, 1926 to Frederick and Edna Ersly, in Elmira N.Y. Survived by daughter Cynthia Welliver, Larry Welliver, daughter Camilla Cruttenden, David Cruttenden, grandchildren Kimberly Welliver of North Carolina, Scott Cruttenden of Pennsylvania and Mark Cruttenden (Lisa Grim) of Pennsylvania, great-grandchildren Makenna and Brady Cruttenden, Alesha, Brittany, Kaitlyn, and Joshua Thatcher, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Gene and Florence Mullen of Victor, NY, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Guyla, brother Theodore Ersly and infant daughter Linda Lee Ersly.
Guyla and Walt celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary August 7, 2018. In his early years, Walt served in the National Guard and was an accountant for the railroad. He then became a Corrections Officer at Sing Sing Correctional Facility until he could finally transfer back to his hometown and the Elmira Correctional Facility(‘The Hill’). He retired after 38 years. Walt worked 2 jobs all his life. His career with Erway Ambulance began at the age of 13 and continued for 55 years. He was part of the team that was trained for the ‘Shockmobile’ when Erway Ambulance placed one of the nation’s first Mobile Intensive Care units into service. He went on to become an Emergency Medical Service instructor in Arnot Ogden’s Center of Paramedic Training Institute. He received a Lifetime Achievement award for Emergency Medical service.
Both Walt and Guyla were involved in the National Faith at Work and were members of the First Baptist Church of Elmira for many years. Walt was an avid golfer and enjoyed Square Dancing with Guyla in the Soaring Twirlers Club in Horseheads. He enjoyed many years as a long-standing member of the Horseheads Elks Lodge and the Masons. Walt’s family would like to give a special thanks to the Town and Country Fire Department, Horseheads. Most mornings you could find Walt there with a cup of coffee and a donut debating whatever the topic of discussion was for the day. Your compassion and camaraderie will never be forgotten.
The family will welcome relatives and friends to Sullivan’s Funeral Home, 365 E. Franklin St. at Rt 13, Horseheads, NY on Friday, March 8, 2019 from 11 – 1 with services held immediately following. He will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery following the service.
